'The World Wants a Real Deal' - Global Day of Action

On the weekend of December 11-13, people around the world took action on climate change. We held over 3,000 events: massive marches in Copenhagen and other cities, signing walls in world capitals, beautiful candlelight vigils in our communities, and church bells ringing out around the world.

This global weekend of action unfolded during the middle of the Copenhagen climate negotiations, and helped shift the dynamic. You did your part, and we did ours, making sure your photos, videos, and stories are projected onto walls and screens all around Copenhagen, and using them as lobbying tools for UN delegates from Argentina to Zimbabwe. We showed the world we are ready are for a real climate deal.

This weekend thousands of vigils, signature walls, and church bells rang at the same time. Here are some of the images from around the world.

The World Wants a Real Deal was the third of three major mass mobilizations in the Tck Tck Tck campaign over the past three months: the resounding Global Wake Up Call led by partner, Avaaz on Sept 21, and the groundbreaking International Day of Climate Action on Oct 24 by partner, 350.org. Building on this incredible momentum, this dynamic, growing and united movement came together in an unprecedented global day of action on December 12 to tell world leaders in no uncertain terms: the world wants a real deal.

These high resolution photos, suitable for posting and re-publishing are collected from over 3,000 events around the planet on December 11th and 12th, calling on world leaders to produce a fair, ambitious, and binding climate agreement in Copenhagen. Delhi, India
Of the 5,000 locals at this candlelight vigil in Delhi, this fire-breather had the most impressive flame. Others played instrument, sang and beat drums and plates to show that the Indian people won't accept anything shor of a real deal as an outcome of the Copenhagen talks.


Sarajavo, Bosnia
At 9 years old, Skender, from Sarajevo, Bosnia is probably the youngest of over 3000 people who coordinated climate candlelight vigils today. Skender organised the vigil after seeing other events posted on the internet around the world. Photos by Almir Djikoli.


Boston, MA, USA
In freezing cold and blustering winds, 150 people gathered outside Senator Kerry's in the Boston, USA to sing, speak, and listen. They called for climate justice and a fair, ambitious, and binding climate treaty.


Bangkok, Thailand

Copenhagen, Denmark
Over 100,000 people gathered in the streets of Copenhagen for a candlelight march for a real climate deal.


Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Sydney, Australia

Over a 100 people came together in Windy Wellington. They lit candles and stood together to tell the capital of Aotearoa, New Zealand that the World wants a Real Deal!

    Wow. Just got back from the amazing march through Copenhagen. The best moment? When darkness fell over the city and tens of thousands lit candles. To see countless points of light shine into Copenhagen, and then to come back to the HQ to watch the thousands of photos stream in from every part of the world is a profoundly moving experience. Right now, this movement is glowing.

    The march went off perfectly, 100,000 people being creative, hopeful, and VERY patient to walk 3 hours in the freezing cold. Vigil with the Elders Desmond Tutu and Mary Robinson, and hundreds of your vigil photos projected on the wall, leaves us speechless.

    An hour before the downtown rally, lots of people coming and going, it's intense in here. Outside is amazing, hundreds of people streaming by with signs, costumes, and more. Expecting a flood of content start to pour in soon, from rallies in Australia, Asia, and soon, outside our door.

    Tired and sore after 6 insanely long days at the COP, but the photos and stories rolling in from early vigils in Hungary, Abu Dhabi, Brasil, and hundreds of others are giving us fuel to continue! Tomorrow is going to be huge. Maybe this might just change the dynamic here. It needs it.

    Haven't been updating this nearly as often as we'd like, because it's been a last-minute dash in the best of ways. Reporters calling, organizers e-mailing with last-minute questions, and with every passing hour the sun sets on more cities around the world and people start preparing for more vigils.
