Copenhagen, Denmark - On December 12th hundreds of thousands of people from around the globe came together for an unprecedented day of action coordinated by the TckTckTck campaign to demand a Real Deal from world leaders in Copenhagen.
The World Wants a Real Deal is a mass mobilization with over 2,500 events taking place in more than 125 countries. At candlelight vigils, marches and special events at temporary walls built in key capitals, people from all walks of life wrote messages, posted photos and signed their names onto the call for a Fair, Ambitious and Binding climate treaty. The TckTckTck petition has been signed by more than 11 million people from every country in the world.
TckTckTck chair and Executive Director of Greenpeace International, Kumi Naidoo said, "That well over one hundred heads of state will gather in Copenhagen and take personal responsibility for making an agreement to avert climate change is already a triumph for civil society, for the many millions of people who demanded that their presidents and prime ministers show up and sign a fair, ambitious and legally binding deal to avert catastrophic climate change.
"This Saturday, people everywhere will remind their leaders that the Copenhagen Climate Summit is not a photo op, it is not a place for speeches, we are watching and we are demanding a real deal," said Mr Naidoo. The World Wants a Real Deal calls for leaders to commit to sign a fair, ambitious and legally binding deal in Copenhagen. Fair - with $150 billion in financial support to help poorer countries adapt to climate change. Ambitious – a deal aligned with the science: emissions must peak by 2015 and carbon dioxide levels reduced to 350 parts per million. Binding – an international treaty that can be verified and enforced. "Millions of people, especially the very poor, are already suffering due to changing weather patterns, droughts and floods. But none of us will be immune from climate change; rich, poor, developed or developing countries, we are all in this together and there is no time to lose. We need a real deal on climate change in Copenhagen." said Archbishop Desmond Tutu of The Elders, a supporter of the TckTckTck campaign and The World Wants a Real Deal events.
At a special vigil inside the Copenhagen negotiation headquarters Archbishop Tutu joined former Irish President Mary Robinson, to deliver The World Wants a Real Deal message to negotiators and leaders. The World Wants a Real Deal has been endorsed by all 226 TckTckTck partners. TckTckTck is an unprecedented global alliance, representing hundreds of millions of people from all walks of life. It is made up of leading international, national and local organizations addressing environment, development, poverty, human rights, health and humanitarian issues. It represents faith-based groups, youth groups, trade unions and individuals all calling for a fair, ambitious and binding climate change agreement in December 2009 in Copenhagen. The world is ready!
