Event Description

UN Climate Meeting in Bangkok

In the lead up to Copenhagen, the UN is holding two major meetings to try to come to agreement on the new climate treaty. The first of these is in Bangkok, critically important as it is the only UN climate meeting to be held in the Global South this year, where much of the immediate impact of climate change is being, and will continue to be, felt.

There are only 15 days for Government experts to sit round tables and come to agreement on the most critical treaty of a generation. 10 days of the negotiations will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from 28 September - 9 October. Civil society groups across Asia are planning to mark the summit with a series of mobilizations, tribunals, exhibitions, and even an elephant caravan. TckTckTck partners across the region have been planning for much of the year, and on October 6 will bring evidence of hearings that have taken place in villages and cities throughout several countries to a regional climate tribunal in Bangkok. The people of Asia will call the G8 countries to account for years of pollution and unchecked carbon emissions that have had a devastating impact on the lives of millions of people in their region.
