Event Description
Religions for Peace, the world’s largest and most representative multi-religious coalition that advances common action for peace among the world’s religious communities, is collaborating with the TckTckTck campaign to facilitate the dynamic partnerships of world’s religious communities as key partners in the effort to realize an ambitious, fair and binding global climate deal at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in December 2009 and to ensure that their voices are heard during the high-level event on climate change for Heads of State and Government to be convened by the UN Secretary-General on September 22 during the sixty-fourth session of the United Nations General Assembly.
On September 23, a broad-based multi-religious delegation with senior religious leaders, representing major faiths - Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Indigenous, Islam and Judaism - from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America will hold a dialogue with policy makers (government representatives) and media to advocate for an ambitious, fair and binding agreement that secures climate justice for all in Copenhagen.
Purpose: The consultation will advance partnership between and among representatives from the religious sector, governments and the United Nations to:
1. Highlight the disproportionate impact of climate change on the marginalized and poor.
2. Seek to highlight a common understanding of and reinforce the urgency of decisively addressing climate change.
3. Challenge the governments to commit themselves to a fair, binding and sustainable agreement in Copenhagen.
4. Explore partnerships between religious leaders and institutions, the UN and governments in pursuing urgent climate action.
The consultation will be informed by an appeal of the World Council of Religions for Peace that calls on heads of states and governments to participate in Copenhagen and secure a fair, binding and sustainable agreement in the December Conference on Climate Change.
Outcome: The consultation will produce a strong message of commitment of religious communities and a call for commitment by governments. The consultation will offer an opportunity of partnerships between governments, UN and religious communities for joint advocacy for climate action.
