350.org is an international campaign dedicated to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis--the solutions that justice demand.
Our mission is to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis—to create a new sense of urgency and of possibility for our planet.
Our focus is on the number 350--as in parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. But 350 is more than a number--it's a symbol of where we need to head as a planet.
Right now, climate negotiators are deciding between different targets for this treaty--and 350 is one of the options on the table. Our campaign works to build the civil society pressure necessary so that the treaty meets the 350 test--and brings our planet, and its people, back to safety.
In order to unite the public, media, and our political leaders behind the 350 goal, we're harnessing the power of the internet to coordinate a planetary day of action on October 24, 2009, United Nations Day. We hope to have actions at hundreds of iconic places around the world - from the Taj Mahal to the Great Barrier Reef to your community - and a clear message to world leaders: the solutions to climate change must be equitable, they must be grounded in science, and they must meet the scale of the crisis.
Why October 24? In order to impact the climate negations, it's imperative to get our message out before the delegates arrive in Copenhagen. Six weeks gives us enough time to truly have a measurable impact.
If an international grassroots movement holds our leaders accountable to the latest climate science, we can start the global transformation we so desperately need.
We are working with hundreds of partners around the world: from congregations in small town in the United States, to Eco-Schools in Denmark, farmers in Cameroon, fisherfolk in Vietnam, and research scientists in Antarctica. Partnership is central to the 350 campaign, and so the tcktcktck campaign is a perfect ally. Together, we will convey the message that a global movement is engaged in the solutions to the climate crisis, and that the time to act is now.
