Beyond Petroleum? To world leaders at the UN Climate Summit this week: Invest in the future, now

It is kind of like living in two worlds at the same time.

On one hand the leaders of most of the world's countries tell us there is an urgent need to come up with a long term solution to big issues like oil spills in our oceans and climate change, but on the other hand those same leaders continue to stall and play political games when it comes to actually coming up with an agreement.

Cool roofs and pavements may help fight global warmingPosted by: Heather Libby

Cool roofs and pavements may help fight global warming

Light-coloured cool rooftops and roads can curb carbon emissions and combat global climate change, found a new study by searchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The study is the first to use a global model to study the idea.

And the researchers have found that implementing cool roofs and cool pavements in cities around the world can not only help cities stay cooler, they can also cool the world, with the potential of cancelling the heating effect of up to two years of worldwide carbon dioxide emissions.

In weather chaos, a case for global warmingPosted by: Heather Libby

In weather chaos, a case for global warming

The summer’s heat waves baked the eastern United States, parts of Africa and eastern Asia, and above all Russia, which lost millions of acres of wheat and thousands of lives in a drought worse than any other in the historical record.

Tropics at Peril: Changing Climate Redrawing the Map

Tropical forests are at risk of losing most of the plants and animals that now comprise their ecosystems, according to a new report from the Carnegie Institution on the effects of climate change and deforestation. In a sober appraisal of the future, the study says that the combined impact of climate change and spreading land use "represents one the greatest global change experiments on Earth today" - and not to our benefit.

Where are you going to be for the 10:10:10 global work party?

We all know the world is warming, but just in case you need more convincing, a recent analysis by NASA of their 5,000 weather stations finds that 2010 is on track to be the warmest year ever on record.

NOAA: Global Warming "undeniable"

Global warning is "undeniable" says a new report published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which looked at 10 climate indicators and concluded they "all tell the same story."

"People have spent thousands of years building society for one climate and now a new one is being created - one that's warmer and more extreme," the NOAA report states.

The Earth is hotter than ever, global warming is real: researchers

Scientists hope findings will debunk some growing skepticism about climate change.

More than 300 scientists from around the world, including several Canadians, hope to blunt some growing skepticism about climate change with a new report that says global warming is a fact and the Earth is hotter than ever.

“The conclusion is unmistakable – yes, the planet is warming,” said Derek Arndt, a co-editor of the report, called State of the Climate, which was published by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA.

Ocean protection efforts receive renewed commitment, but more action neededPosted by: Brendan DeMelle

Ocean protection efforts receive renewed commitment, but more action needed

Protecting the world’s oceans is of vital importance for climate stability, since oceans are able to absorb huge amounts of carbon dioxide – at least when they are healthy.

Nobel Prize-winning climate change expert Stephen H. Schneider dies at 65

Stephen H. Schneider, a Stanford University biologist on the vanguard of climate-change research for four decades, who argued eloquently on human culpability in global warming and willingly threw himself into the political fray to explain and defend the scientific evidence, has died. He was 65.

Schneider had a heart attack Monday while flying to London from a science meeting in Stockholm, according to Stanford spokesman Dan Stober.
