Climate deal loopholes 'make farce' of rich nations' pledges

New research reveals carbon emissions from rich nations could actually rise under loopholes in the proposed UN climate deal.

Rich countries have been put on the back foot after new research showed that current pledges to cut greenhouse gas emissions could be wiped out by gaping loopholes in the UN climate change treaty put forward in Copenhagen last year.

A traffic jam of climate negotiatorsPosted by: Heather Libby

A traffic jam of climate negotiators

The second day of the negotiations at Bonn saw the opening of the Adhoc working groups on Kyoto Protocol and Long Term Cooperative Action. It was interesting to see that Sal Maritim where the LCA was convening full with the hustle and bustle of people. State of affairs were so alarming that forget finding a plug point one could hardly even find a place to sit.

There was so much janta ( public) on the road, but that didnt put pressure on the wreckless drivers at Sal Maritim.

Adopt a Negotiator kicks off coverage of the Bonn climate change talks

My day started out dressed in a shark costume. I was tasked with welcoming climate negotiators to the talks by strapping on a grey fin, stuffing my suit with fake money, and hustling fake loans with big teeth. Definitely not how I imagined that my first hours of the Bonn Climate Change Talks would go, but these are strange days.

Weekly climate news roundup: May 24-28, 2010

The oil spill in the Gulf continues to dominate headlines.  The 'Top Kill' (which consisted of literally shoving 1.2 million gallons of mud, rubber balls and scrap metal into the damaged well in an effort to plug it permanently) has failed and it's back to square one.  Drilling at those depths, with untried technology and spill mitigation plans as sophisticated as hurling junk at the gusher -- I mean, really -- reveals the instanity of our addiction to fossil fuels at any cost.  Fortunately, the connection to the catastrophe in the Gulf and U.S.

Europe debates climate 'ambition'

Connie Hedegaard, the EU's Climate Commissioner, is seeking to open a debate on whether the bloc should adopt a tougher target than it already has for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Back in the early months of last year, EU leaders signed off a target of 20% cuts from 1990 levels by 2020, rising to 30% if a global deal emerged at the Copenhagen summit that would see other countries and other blocs taking a commensurate share.
