Conveying the campaign message

This August at Beijing's Temple of Earth, an installation of 100 ice sculptures of children melted in the heat. It represented the billion lives that will be lost in Asia because of water shortages caused by climate change. The artwork — commissioned by Greenpeace to launch the TckTckTck campaign for 'bold climate action' — is one of many cultural events aiming to sway political negotiators in the lead-up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) in Copenhagen in December.

350.org is a new generation of organization, and today shows how well their model fits the noisy wired world we live in. You see, 350 aren't trying to build a massive new organization, or grow their own brand. Their one and only goal is to get a number - in this case, what we all believe is the most important number in the world - into the public consciousness.

And have they ever done that today. A roar just went around the office a few minutes ago, "we're the top story on Google news!".

Campaigners against global warming have drawn on an arsenal of visually startling tactics over the years, from posing nude on a Swiss glacier to scaling smokestacks at coal-fired power plants.

On Saturday, they tried something new with the goal of prodding countries to get serious about reaching an international climate accord: a synchronized burst of more than 4,300 demonstrations, from the Himalayas to the Great Barrier Reef, all centered on the number 350.
