Why we need you
Time has run out. World leaders returned from Copenhagen without a fair, ambitious, and binding climate deal. Most politicians failed to take bold action, because they hear more from energy lobbyists who resist change than from their own citizens who demand it.
In 2009 over 15 million of us from nearly every country on earth have built what could be the most diverse and powerful movement of our generation. It was enough to ensure leaders didn't dare sell us a bad deal as success, but wasn't enough to get the deal we need. So we must tell them that we are not done yet.
For some countries around the world, climate change is an issue of their very survival, today. Yet, the threat is really to us all. President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives warned the world, “If we cannot save 350,000 Maldivians from rising seas today, then we cannot save the millions in New York, London or Mumbai tomorrow”.
An army of governmental delegates and lobbyists descended on Copenhagen, but they didn’t get a deal done. Many politicians came to the Copenhagen climate conference to delay action on a climate treaty, claiming it just isn’t realistic to act. We watched world leaders find over a trillion dollars in bailout money last year, yet they said they couldn’t do a deal in Copenhagen to save the planet after three years of talks.
Copenhagen isn’t the end, and we can still get a meaningful climate deal. Many leaders showed signs of promise, and we know anything is possible if they hear from enough people who they value. That is why we need you more than ever.
People motivated by hope for the future can change the course of history. We aren’t asking for you to do this alone. Join over fifteen million citizens from almost every country on earth and over 200 of some of the most respected civil society groups in the world to change the course of history.
The time is still now and the stakes are higher than ever. Will you join the global climate movement, or, if you've already signed on, help us build the campaign for 2010?
