Human Countdown wakes up the climate movement

• September 20, 2009

Earlier today in the warm September sunshine at the Trump Wollman rink in Central Park, over a thousand people gathered to create a piece of ariel art.

The piece, organized by TckTckTck partner Oxfam and numerous other national and local partners, formed from the shape of a huge hourglass with the planet in it, with colour coordinated people as grains of sand, symbolizing the fact that time is indeed running out for the climate. The “sand” in the hourglass then formed the letters of our logo, TckTckTck, while our soon-to-be released campaign song played in the background.

Below see some incredible photos from the event, and soon we’ll be posting the full video from the final piece. It was really well planned, the folks at Oxfam did an incredible job and everything ran like a swiss train.

It was a great community experience – a rare event designed not only for media impact (hence the ariel phtos) but as a rewarding community event for everyone participating. The energy in the park was amazing with happy people from all walks of live, children, spectators, and least a hundred mainstream and independent media capturing the story.

The amazing thing, is that despite the energy and the effort put into this countdown, it is still only the kick-off event to Monday’s Global Wake Up Call. This human-powered animation is inspiring and will be felt locally and around all over the world, but it is only one of over 2,400 events; all over the planet, in over one hundred and thirty countries, happening on Monday.

To watch Global Wake Up call events unfold around the planet, visit Avaaz’ campaign hub for live photos, videos, and stories as they happen, live around the world.

Now what about you? If you haven’t yet signed up for one yet, and it’s still before noon in your time zone, go and join your local Wake Up Call event, it is a lot of fun and we’re truly changing the future here. Stay tuned for many updates on this site.

Here are some photos from yesterday’s great event:
