Would you like to adopt a negotiator?

• September 29, 2009

This might sound a little strange, but all over the world there are poor defenseless little climate change negotiators just waiting for you to adopt them.

TckTckTck has created the Adopt-a-Negotiator project, and the idea is that people assign themselves to tracking the lead climate negotiators for every nation in the run-up to the Copenhagen climate summit scheduled for this December. Prior to the big summit in Copenhagen there is a series of much lower profile meetings normally only attended by negotiators as opposed to high-profile politicians. For this reason these events normally go unnoticed.

In fact, there’s such a meeting underway this week and next in Bangkok, Thailand. At this meeting, as well as many that came before it, negotiators work to whittle down a hugely complicated agreement with a mind-boggling amount of jargon, into a relatively succinct treaty that can then be considered by world leaders at the Copenhagen summit.

So these “informal” meetings, as they are sometimes referred to, are actually very important. A lot of decisions are made at these meetings that have a huge effect on what the final treaty document will look like when it arrives for consideration in Copenhagen. The Adopt-a-Negotiator program is aimed at ensuring that the actions at these “informal” meetings do not go unnoticed and in their own words, “let the negotiators know that we are watching and willing them to negotiate a Climate Change deal that is safe, fair and will ensure that we all have a future.”

So if you have a bit of spare time on your hands, drop the Adopt-a-Negotiator team a line and see how you can help. At the least you can join their Facebook Group or follow them on Twitter to stay up-to-date on what the climate negotiators are up to. You can also follow some of the best negotiator blogs on our Climate Voice section, that aggregates all the best content from inside all the UN climate negotiations.
